How are your hands?
Often times I call my parents back home. They are older so I don’t want to stress them out with what is actually going on with me and as a result, everytime I call they ask: “How are your hands?”
To be quite honest, my hands hurt and my wrists hurt even more, which makes it difficult to do things with your hands.
I downplay it, a lot.
The truth is, this is a more accurate answer to “How are your hands”. Imagine your back itches, but you can’t move your arm to the back because your shoulders feel like they are about to be ripped apart and pulled out of their sockets.
If you can get past that part and your fingers can get to where the itch is, then imagine not being able to bend your fingers to actually scratch the area where it itches. So all you manage to do is rub it with fingers that hurt so much because they are being pushed out of their frozen state. This then leads to more itching because all you effectively get right is to lightly move over and make the area itchier.
You have a back scratcher thingy but you cannot lift your arm to go over your shoulder and you cannot hold the scratcher with enough strength to actually get anywhere. Itchier.
So you find a tree or a wall corner or a door and do like the animals do – you scratch.
As for my hands – they are just fine thank you.
